What is Reiki

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a traditional Japanese technique that has been practiced for over 100 years to promote stress reduction and deep healing.

The word Reiki is represented by two Japanese kanji, ideograms used for the written language, Rei and Ki. “Rei” meaning “universal” and “Ki” meaning “life energy.” Reiki is the non-physical energy that animates all living things and is vital in everything we do.

While there are many types of healing energy, Reiki is a high frequency energy that can only be channeled by someone who has received the attunement for it, done through a Placement or Ignition from a Reiki Master.

Reiki energy is subtle and guides itself, rather than requiring the direction of the practitioner. The role of the practitioner is to simply channel the energy flowing from spiritual consciousness, either through the traditional approach of laying of hands or through the modernized approach of Distance Reiki.

History of Reiki

Reiki was discovered in 1922 by the intense spiritual practices of Mikao Usui and later brought to Hawaii in 1937 by a woman named Hawayo Takata. She would go on to teach 22 Reiki Masters that carried on the tradition after her passing.

It is from Takata’s remarkable practice and teachings that we in the U.S, and all over the world, have the knowledge and ability to experience Reiki as we know it today. While rooted in philosophy, it is not a religion, making it a healing modality that is compatible with all faiths.

Distance Reiki

Because Reiki is an unseen life force energy that is consistent with the vibrational continuum of conventional physics, we know this energy cannot be constrained to time and space. Because this energy flows through each of us, Reiki can be sent to anyone in the world, regardless of distance. This makes Virtual Reiki is just as effective as receiving a session in-person.

What to expect during an In-Person Reiki Session

In-Person Reiki is performed fully clothed on a covered massage table or optionally in a chair. Before starting, you and your practitioner will go over any expectations for the session. Once comfortable, you will be led through some deep breathing and relaxation techniques. The practitioner will then begin to place hands gently on the body, holding the intention of healing and the Reiki energies will begin flowing automatically. RELAX and ENJOY the energies running through you. You may feel cold or hot sensations, tingling or vibrating. It is best to simply notice and trust without judgment. Reiki is working to rebalance the system and fill you with this positively overflowing life energy!

What to expect during a Distance Reiki Session

Distance Reiki sessions are held via Zoom from the comfort of your own space. Your practitioner will lead you through some deep breathing and relaxation techniques as you remain in a quiet, comfortable position. The practitioner will simply hold the intention of healing while connecting Reiki energy to your energy field. You remain an active participant, holding space mentally and physically for the session. RELAX and ENJOY the energies running through you. You may feel cold or hot sensations, tingling or vibrating. It is best to simply notice and trust without judgment. Reiki is working to rebalance the system and fill you with this positively overflowing life energy!

What to expect during a Group Reiki Session

Group Reiki sessions are held via Zoom from the comfort of your own space. Just like with Distance Reiki, the only difference is our physical location to one another but you are receiving the benefits of Reiki all the same. In a group setting, the energy of Reiki is amplified and is more like an energetic “tune-up” than the deep work an individual session allows. Being in a group where the intention is set to support and heal, witnessing this in others allows your own body and heart to open up to receiving.

What to expect at the end of a Session

Whether you received Reiki in-person, via distance or part of a group, at the end of the healing session you will feel a deeper calm, increased relaxation and clarity on your path ahead. Some feel dramatic shifts right away and for others it will be more subtle. Neither is ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ as healing is not linear.

While you can certainly return to the day’s tasks and activities, it’s important to reserve time for yourself after to listen to your body. Self-care doesn’t need to end because your session is over. Give yourself permission to do anything emotionally or physically that feels supportive to your needs. Journal, do some light stretching, get lots of rest and prioritize drinking water. Try to avoid alcohol and high levels of caffeine for at least a few days after.

Of note: Some symptoms may appear to worsen at first. Reiki works to eliminate toxins in the body and can bring to light unprocessed emotional blockages that may manifest in the body like fatigue or headaches. These symptoms are NORMAL, temporary and a good sign that Reiki is working on your healing journey.

What Reiki can heal

Reiki is used to heal the physical, emotional, mental and spirit bodies. By spirit, we are talking about the inner quality or nature of the person.

Emerging from new and existing research, Reiki has been shown to reduce pain, provide preventative care as well as help manage mental and emotional issues like anxiety and addiction. Reiki can soften the spiritual stress often crafted by existing in these elevated ways of being, specifically from the impacts of trauma.

There are no known side effects and Reiki never causes harm. A session can be used at any time for any situation in which you could benefit from an increase in life energy. It’s helpful even when you are feeling good but is especially helpful when you are feeling tired or depleted.

While Reiki does quicken the healing process, it is important to see a licensed health care provider if you have a medical or psychological condition.

Why I Practice

I discovered the nature of Reiki a few years back from my brother. Much of my life was falling apart around me and I was feeling stressed and anxious. As an intuitive at heart, he asked if I wanted a session. Skeptical but open to the experience, my deep willingness to heal allowed my brother to use Reiki energy to bring to light the wounds and defenses my body was holding on to, some I wasn’t even consciously aware of.

I had never felt so seen and accepted and whole.

That day was the start of the growing spaciousness within and a softening of all the hard edges. I began to seek Reiki as a tool to aid in my healing as I peeled back layer by layer. As part of this journey, the day came when I decided I wanted to share the power of Reiki with others. On a weekend in August 2022 I was handed a certificate by the International Center for Reiki Training proclaiming my new status as a First and Second Degree Reiki Practitioner.

Reiki has continued to inspire and lead me to new growth. Because of this very deep, personal connection, I am honored to share this practice with those seeking the liberation we all so deeply crave.
